Cost Vs. Value in Hiring a Virtual Assistant

Lightbox saying think outside the box
"You guys are great at knowing what something costs but you don’t know what it’s worth."

A mentor shared this quote with me once. He was telling a story about one of his commanders in the military who hated when higher ups from D.C. would visit. This unit was working in a high-threat area and knew exactly what equipment they needed to accomplish their mission. The visitors from D.C. only appreciated what that equipment cost.

As business owners, we have to focus on both. We have to watch our costs to ensure our business is sustainable in the long run. Yet we must also focus on each asset’s worth. We generally do not renew subscriptions that do not serve us, we get rid of equipment we do not need anymore, and we purchase services that support us and the bottom line.

How much does a virtual assistant cost?

When we get asked this question, we recognize the business owner may just be doing research as they get started on this path toward delegation and, for that, we have a cost breakdown here.

Sometimes, though, the business owner is simply overly focused on cost. Be sure to also consider the worth of a VA to your business.

Think of tasks that need to be completed consistently, are important but not urgent, have repeat steps, and you do not do or put off all the time.

  • Travel arrangements
  • Email follow up
  • Calendar management
  • Appointment setting
  • Customer intake
  • Customer contact
  • Marketing events follow up
  • Building document templates
  • Form management
  • Social media posting
  • Creating monthly flyers
  • Website updates

Ignoring costs for now, what would it be worth to you to have tasks like these magically done? How much time back in your day or work week would you gain? What makes delegating worth it?

When you have more energy for the tasks only you can complete

  • When you have more “mental RAM” available
  • When you have time for self care
  • When your business grows at the pace you want
  • When you are able to pay yourself more without doing more

The Value of a Virtual Assistant

When a VA can take on these responsibilities for you, your energy and mental RAM exponentially increase. That value should be included when considering the cost of a VA. You should be able to see that value pretty quickly once you get started!
